Influences of Psychological Factors on Oral Lichen Planus: A Review

Abstract: The association between certain chronic inflammatory skin diseases and psychological factor has been well documented. However, the exact magnitude of the association between lichen planus and depression/anxiety/stress/sleep disturbance is unknown. A review were performed to examine the prevalence and odds of depression, anxiety, stress and sleep disturbance in patients with lichen planus. The reviews showed a high prevalence of current signs of anxiety, depression, stress and sleep disturbance, as well as a positive and significant association between OLP and signs of anxiety, depression, stress and sleep disturbance. Case-control studies showed a strong association between lichen planus and signs of depression, anxiety, stress and sleep disturbance. These results raise the necessity of screening for the presence of depressive and anxiety symptoms or stress and sleep disturbance in patients with lichen planus, and of referring such patients for psychiatric evaluation and appropriate treatment, if necessary.
