This study explores the integration of African artistic elements into the design of dupattas, traditional South Asian scarves. African art, characterized by its rich heritage of geometric patterns, symbolic motifs, and ceremonial designs expressed through woodwork, metalwork, and textiles, offers a unique design vocabulary that spans centuries of cultural evolution. Drawing from this artistic tradition, which encompasses ceremonial masks, ritual objects, and textile patterns from various African regions, we documented and modified these motifs to create twenty unique dupatta designs across four categories: border, one-sided, two-sided, and center designs. Our approach focused particularly on adapting geometric patterns, symbolic representations, and traditional African color harmonies while respecting their cultural significance. Using a monochromatic pastel palette, we produced tie-dye samples on Chanderi, silk, crepe, and Kota Doria fabrics. Expert evaluation guided the selection of final designs, which were then executed using marbling techniques for backgrounds and hand-painted details, enhanced with appliqué work. The study demonstrates the potential for cross-cultural artistic fusion in contemporary textile design while preserving the essence of both African artistic traditions and South Asian garment aesthetics.
