Digital Discourse and Identity Construction: A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Gender Performance in Social Media Language (Instagram/TikTok)
Abdullah Khalil Abdullah Alazhare
This paper examines how gendered identities are linguistically performed and negotiated on Instagram and TikTok, using a sociolinguistic framework. Combining corpus analysis with discourse analysis, it reveals how platform-specific affordances (e.g., hashtags, duets, filters) shape gendered self-presentation, reinforcing or subverting traditional norms.
In the digital age, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become critical spaces for identity negotiation, where users perform gender through multimodal language (text, audio, visuals). While prior research has examined gendered discourse on text-centric platforms (e.g., Twitter), the visual-linguistic interplay and platform-specific affordances (e.g., TikTok duets, Instagram Reels) remain underexplored. This study bridges this gap by investigating how gendered identities are constructed, reinforced, or subverted through linguistic and paralinguistic cues on these platforms, drawing on sociolinguistic theories of indexicality and Judith Butler’s concept of gender performativity.
