Abstract

In The Kite Runner the Afghan American novelist Khaled Hosseini’s brilliant character building and wonderful plots encourage many critics to think about it in many different ways. Critics have two different views about the protagonist Amir. For some critics Amir was responsible and blameworthy for his childhood attitude towards Hassan and some critics think that Amir was not responsible for his childhood mistakes. However, in the novel Hosseini brings out two different sides of human being through the portrayal of the protagonist Amir. The two sides of human being are innocent childhood with many unintentional mistakes and matured adolescence with the rise of good human instinct. In The Kite Runner Amir is not an exception but the example of it. He is not a hero of dynamic characteristics rather he is presenting the role of a common man to represent some common characteristics of every human being. Amir as a character has lacking and flaws which make him more realistic. Like every common man some unwanted and unintentional mistakes were made by Amir in his childhood and in the adulthood Amir wanted to correct the mistakes and achieves redemption and self-realization. This paper will try to prove that Amir’s unwanted childhood mistakes made toward Hassan were the result of his childhood innocence and he was a victim of circumstances. I will further show that his redemption and self-realization took place because Amir himself was a good hearted man with good human instinct which grew up with his maturity. I will try to prove that Amir was not immoral or blameworthy for his childhood mistakes which were not done intentionally. I will discuss about age and maturity, Amir’s childhood activities, his circumstances and environment, Baba’s behavior and Afghan’s racism in the novel to prove that.
