Daisy: A Picture of Corrupted Capitalist Women in The Great Gatsby
Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), is an American writer whose works were instigated by the so-called “jazz age” as he called it himself. Fitzgerald published two collections of short stories Flappers and Philosophers and Tales of the Jazz Age in 1921 and 1922.His Roman-Catholic upbringing played a vital role in his creative output. Some of his famous novels are This Side of Paradise (1920), The Beautiful and The Damned (1922), Tender is The Night (1934), The Great Gatsby (1925).He died on December 21, 1940. At the time of his death much of Fitzgerald’s fiction including The Great Gatsby, were forgotten or unread. Today The Great Gatsby is the subject of many diverse critical assessments that have elevated the novel to its current prominent position in American literature. It has been considered the finest achievement of Fitzgerald’s literary career. The Great Gatsby as an epitome of the jazz age novel, reflects the socio-political conditions of America at 1930s. It is a famous classic of English literature. Fitzgerald presents a prominent female character Daisy in the novel. Daisy prioritizes capitalistic trends for her life forgetting human-centric tradition. In Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary Capitalism means “an economic system in which a country’s business and industry are controlled and run for profit by private owners rather than by the government”. This is how capitalism inspires to pursue wealth at the personal level. Knowingly or unknowingly, Daisy is influenced by it like men. This paper will attempts to show that Fitzgerald portraits Daisy’s character to represent the picture of capitalist women in the novel who become corrupted by adopting capitalistic mentality and destroy the peace of society and their family.
