Childhood depression is an emerging public health concern in India, often underdiagnosed due to cultural stigma and lack of awareness. This study investigates the prevalence of depression among Indian children aged 6 to 12 years and examines socio-demographic factors influencing depressive symptoms. Utilizing a newly developed, culturally sensitive assessment scale, 150 children from diverse socio-economic backgrounds were evaluated. Findings indicate a significant prevalence of depressive symptoms, particularly among girls and children from lower socio-economic strata. These results underscore the necessity for early mental health screening and the development of inclusive, child-centered mental health strategies in India.
