Hijra, Systemic Discrimination, Mainstream, Cultural Identity, Social Exclusion, Gender Diversity and Economic Empowerment.
The third gender community, commonly known as hijras, has been an integral part of South Asian societies for centuries. In Bangladesh, their recognition as a distinct gender category has been officially acknowledged by the government in recent years. However, despite the legal recognition, the third gender community faces significant socio-economic and cultural challenges. This article explores the socio-economic and cultural status of the third gender community in Bangladesh, focusing on their living conditions, access to education, employment opportunities, social acceptance, and cultural representation. It highlights the systemic discrimination they face in both rural and urban settings and examines the role of the government and civil society in improving their situation. The study aims to understand the complexities surrounding the third gender community's lives and the steps needed to promote their social inclusion and empowerment in Bangladeshi society.
