The Sri Penusila Narasimha Wildlife Sanctuary in Nellore district is a significant sacred grove with a rich biodiversity, believed to be imbued with spiritual significance by local tribal communities. This research explores 135 tree species, belonging to 96 genera and 38 families, with probable medicinal potential. These species were collected from diverse habitats in the Penchalakona region, a mountainous area in the Eastern Ghats, which boasts an array of flora and fauna, including several endemic and endangered taxa. The study highlights the importance of plants as renewable resources, emphasizing their role in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Homeopathy, and Unani, which continue to provide primary healthcare to a significant portion of the global population. The survey method involved fieldwork across multiple seasons, focusing on plant specimens in various developmental stages, and documenting their ethnomedicinal uses. The collected species were pressed, dried, and mounted for herbarium preparation, with proper identification done using authoritative floras. The family-wise analysis revealed that the most species-rich families in the region are Leguminosae, Rubiaceae, and Malvaceae, followed by Combretaceae. The study also underscores the threat posed by over-exploitation of plant resources, particularly non-wood forest products, and the need for sustainable management and conservation efforts. Awareness and active participation of local communities are essential for preserving the biodiversity of sacred groves like Penchalakona, ensuring the survival of these invaluable plant species.
