Ali Brothers, Caliph, Khilafat issue, Ottoman Empire
The Khilafat Movement was a movement led by Indian Muslims in India during the British rule from 1919 to 1924. It was led by prominent Muslim leaders such as Maulana Muhammad Ali Jawahar and Shaukat Ali, known as the Ali Brothers, along with leaders such as Hakim Ajmal Khan and Abul Kalam Azad. The movement was a political campaign that protested the British government’s actions against the Ottoman Empire after World War I. The Ottoman Empire had been weakened by the Treaty of Sèvres and was facing regional changes. The aim of the movement was to restore the position and influence of the Caliph. The Caliph was the religious and political leader of Muslims who ruled the Ottoman Empire. As a Caliph, the Ottoman Sultan was regarded by Indian Muslims as the embodiment of Islamic unity. They were very concerned about the possible loss of power of the Caliphate and the hatred of the British towards Islam. The main goal of the movement was to prevent the Ottoman Empire from weakening and to keep the Caliph in power. Thus, the campaign’s aim was to exert pressure on the British government to achieve their goal. Specifically, the demonstrators insisted that the Muslim holy sites remain governed by the Caliph and that an adequate amount of land be left to the Caliph after the war. M.K. Gandhi openly supported the Khilafat issue and included it among the various issues of non-cooperation movement. The movement finally ended when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk abolished the caliphate over all in 1924.
