In this paper, we present a lock-free atomic snapshot algorithm designed for High-Performance Computing (HPC) in the MPI Remote Memory Access (RMA) model. An atomic snapshot is a valuable primitive for remote memory access, enabling multiple processes to interact with concurrent data structures efficiently. Atomic snapshots have diverse applications, including constructing multi-writer registers from single-writer registers, radar tracking systems, distributed counters and accumulators, checkpointing, concurrent backups, and monitoring parallel systems.
An atomic snapshot supports two fundamental operations: update and scan. The update operation allows a processor to write data to its designated memory location, while the scan operation provides a linearizable view of all n segments. This paper introduces a non-blocking atomic snapshot implementation in which the update operation leverages MPI’s atomic primitives, namely MPI_Accumulate and MPI_Compare_and_Swap. For the scan operation, we employ MPI_Get_accumulate to atomically read register values.
The proposed system was evaluated on an HPE Cray EX supercomputer to assess its performance and scalability in large-scale parallel environments.
