Abstract:
The most popular biofuel is biodiesel, an excellent replacement for petrol and diesel. Biodiesel is produced from vegetable waste such as spinach, potato peels, pea pods, and cauliflower leaves, seeds like low-quality groundnut and soybean, and algae such as Chlorella. Chlorella absorbs carbon dioxide and water to produce lipids, which can contain 20-50% oil. Biodiesel is created by extracting and converting these harvested lipids through a process called transesterification reaction, which transforms the lipids into biodiesel and generates renewable energy. Biodiesel can be produced using four primary methods: direct use and blending of vegetable oils, formation of microemulsions, thermal cracking (also known as pyrolysis), and the transesterification process. The manufacturing of algae biodiesel involves two crucial steps: first, drying the algal biomass, followed by lipid extraction. The second phase also involves transesterification reaction, converting lipids into biodiesel. Biodiesel is favoured as a renewable energy source due to its biodegradability, low toxicity, reduced emissions, low sulphur content, and minimal concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs]. The production of biodiesel from leftover vegetables and algae offers significant social, economic, and environmental benefits. Compared to petroleum diesel, this eco-friendly method can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%, enhancing air quality and mitigating the effects of climate change.
