Abstract

The increasing sophistication and operational tempo of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in modern military forces necessitate advanced management strategies. This paper explores the application of data analytics to enhance the management and operational efficiency of UAVs within the Indian Air Force (IAF). It addresses the problem of optimizing UAV lifecycle management, from maintenance to mission execution, through data-driven insights. The research objectives are to identify key data analytics applications for UAV management, conduct a comparative analysis of UAV adoption and data analytics integration in the air forces of the USA, Russia, and China, and explore the implications and potential benefits for the IAF. Based on a qualitative analysis of provided documents detailing UAV programs and data analytics potential, the paper identifies crucial applications including predictive maintenance, mission planning optimization, enhanced situational awareness through sensor data analysis, performance evaluation, and improved training simulations. Key findings highlight the varying levels of maturity and focus in data analytics adoption among the compared nations (US maturity, Russian focus on autonomy, Chinese emphasis on networked intelligence) and underscore the IAF's opportunity to leverage these insights. The paper concludes that strategic implementation of data analytics presents a significant opportunity for the IAF to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and overall management of its UAV fleet, contributing to improved operational capabilities.
