Abstract

Beauty as a notion has developed over history, being shaped by society, culture, and the time factor. Beauty ideals change over time, but they usually tend to be universal ideals that claim themselves as truths. Today, social media and media create such high standards of beauty that it brings enormous pressure to individuals, especially women. This essay critically explores how beauty standards are socially constructed as opposed to naturally given, relying on feminist literature theories and current studies. Importantly, Simone de Beauvoir's premise that gender and identity are historically and socially constructed disputes the immutability of beauty standards. Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth elucidates how beauty ideals operate as an instrument of societal control, especially with the increase in social and professional liberation of women. This paper argues that such constructed standards are perpetuating insecurity and exclusion but are benefiting consumer culture and hence should be called for a more inclusive and diverse understanding of beauty.
