Annona Squamosa, Annonaceae, Primitive
The Annonaceae family, commonly known as the custard apple family, is predominantly found in tropical regions with some genera in temperate zones. India is home to approximately 129 species of this family. The family, part of the order Magnoliales, consists of 2,500 species and 130 genera, making it the largest family in this order. Annona squamosa (sugar apple or custard apple) is particularly well-known for its adaptability to tropical lowland climates, surpassing A. reticulata and A. cherimola in cultivation. This species, along with its leaves and bark, holds medicinal value due to its antioxidant properties and bioactive compounds, including annonin and squamosin. Morphological analysis confirms Annona squamosa as a primitive plant that belongs to Annonaceae family.
