Bile duct stricture is an abnormal narrowing of the bile duct caused by traumatic injury, malignancies (bile duct, liver, or pancreas), and fibrosis or scarring from gallstone obstruction. Management typically involves surgical intervention or endoscopic techniques such as dilation or stenting. Conventional plastic and metallic stents are associated with complications like infection, migration, tissue overgrowth, and the need for removal through secondary surgery. Biodegradable stents offer a potential solution by naturally dissolving within the body, thereby reducing complications. To evaluate the clinical effectiveness, safety, and performance of a self-expanding bioabsorbable stent in managing biliary strictures. A fluoroscopically guided procedure was performed on an elderly patient to place bioabsorbable stents in the bilateral hepatic ducts. The stent is composed of braided bioabsorbable fibers, which degrade within three months and fully resorb by six months post-implantation. The primary outcome was the patency of the biliary ducts and the absence of recurrent stricture. The procedure was successful, with no immediate complications. Follow-up imaging confirmed that the biliary ducts remained patent, with no evidence of recurrent stricture or adverse events. The bioabsorbable stent functioned effectively within the expected degradation timeline, demonstrating positive clinical outcomes. Bioabsorbable stents offer a safe and effective alternative for managing biliary strictures, reducing the need for secondary surgical removal and minimizing complications associated with longer stent retention. Further clinical studies are necessary to validate these findings and explore long-term benefits.
