Wave Rider Buoys (WRBs) are pivotal instruments that measure ocean surface conditions such as wave height, period, and direction. For artisanal and small-scale fishers, real-time ocean state information is crucial to ensure safety, optimize fishing efforts, and reduce economic losses. This paper presents the Ratnagiri Wave Rider Buoy (WRB) as a case study, highlighting its scientific contributions such as freak wave detection, seasonal wave climate characterization, and infra-gravity wave analysis and its direct benefits to fisher communities. Integration of WRB data with INCOIS advisories and PFZ forecasts demonstrates how these technologies can significantly improve fisher livelihoods along the Indian coast.
