The policies and systems of water management under the Delhi Sultanate were emblematic not only of the administrative efficiency of the regime but also of social, economic, and environmental balance. The objective of this paper is to analyse the strategies for conservation, distribution, and utilisation of water resources under the Delhi Sultanate. It highlights the role and architectural significance of the stepwells, wells, canals, and reservoirs built by the rulers. Sultanate rulers such as Iltutmish, Alauddin Khilji and the Tughlaqs played an important role in the water infrastructure schemes of the Sultanate. These rulers not only contributed to water conservation and management by constructing reservoirs, lakes, canals, stepwells, etc., like Shauz-i-Shamsi, Hauz-i-Khas, but also gave direction to urban development, agricultural irrigation, religious beliefs and social life of the people. Its details are available to us through contemporary travelogues, historical texts, archives and architectural remains. The research seeks to understand the historical background of the water system through archival sources, architectural remains, and contemporary literature. Finally, this research demonstrates that the water management system of the Delhi Sultanate was highly effective in eliminating water scarcity, with rulers and influential individuals playing a significant role; this success can serve as inspiration for addressing current water crises.
