Shifts in Educational Outcomes in West Bengal: from Pre-Pandemic to Post-Pandemic Periods

Abstract
The outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020 led to a change in educational models of delivery from the traditional face-to-face method to blended learning in West Bengal. Based on the comparative analysis of outlined pre- and post-pandemic educational processes in West Bengal this research explores the dynamics of access, equity, and quality. Before the outbreak of the pandemic, education involved face-to-face session teaching, physical contact, and standard form of assessment. COVID-19 forced an abrupt switch to online and distance learning that elucidated and magnified works of technology inaccessibility and differences among learners. Therefore, to cope with such challenges the education system of West Bengal shifted towards online learning and face-to-face teaching practices and embrace new practices like Learning Management Systems(LMS) and more investment in IT. However, as the following studies reveal long-term effects, the difficulties exist in students’ attentiveness and technological pressure. Future developments are proposed to improve in the digitalization of infrastructure, usage of the Internet, and funding of equity for the production of relevant content. Primary and secondary stakeholders identify flexibility as the main advantage of Blended Learning whereas tertiary challenges relate to technology utilization and educational oversight. The study proposes the need to intervene tactfully and in a definitive manner on these challenges to build up a resilient system of education in West Bengal.
