Towards the Realisation of Sexual and Reproductive Rights of Women in Sub-Saharan Africa
Reproductive rights for women are fundamental rights that address a variety of issues about women’s capacity to make knowledgeable decisions regarding their reproductive health, including access to contraception, safe abortion services, maternal health care, access to assisted reproductive technology (ART), and protection against gender based violence. These rights are also intertwined with maternal health and health status. While other regions of the world have recorded remarkable progress in respect to these issues, the vast majority of sub-Saharan African nations are foully underperforming in areas of women’s health. This paper argues that undoing the present situation is pertinent to the perfection of women’s health status in the region, asserting that it is a great challenge calling for a full attack on the social, cultural and economic limits to realising African women’s reproductive rights. Strangely, those countries in which these rights struggle also are state parties to international legal regimes on women rights. In the light of this absurdity this paper examines the limitations and prospects for the reproductive rights guarantee in four sub-Saharan African countries which includes; Cameroon, Kenya, South Africa, aiming to pull these countries from underperforming to high performing health systems.
