This study examines the psychological well-being of girls in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV), identifying key factors and effective interventions. KGBVs, residential schools for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds in India, provide a unique context to explore these dynamics. The research highlights socio-demographic variables, school environment, and family influence as critical factors impacting the psychological well-being of these girls. Socio-economic status, parental education, and rural backgrounds significantly influence their mental health and access to educational resources. A supportive school climate, characterized by positive teacher-student relationships and peer interactions, enhances well-being by fostering self-acceptance, autonomy, and purpose. Family support, including emotional and communicative stability, also plays a vital role in promoting higher self-esteem and reducing anxiety.
Interventions aimed at improving psychological well-being include behavioral interventions, positive psychological interventions (PPIs), and educational support. Behavioral interventions focus on life skills training and counseling, while PPIs incorporate mindfulness, gratitude exercises, and positive thinking. Academic support through remedial classes and mentoring is crucial in reducing academic stress and enhancing self-confidence. Additionally, community involvement provides a broader support network, involving parents and local leaders in creating a supportive environment for the girls.
