Abstract: Child marriage remains a pervasive violation of human rights, disproportionately affecting millions of girls worldwide. In response to this grave concern, many countries have embarked on the path of criminalizing child marriage, recognizing it as a serious offense with legal consequences. This abstract delves into the significance, challenges, and implications of criminalizing child marriage as a crucial step towards safeguarding children's rights. The abstract begins by contextualizing the issue, highlighting the prevalence and harmful impact of child marriage on individuals, families, and communities. It underscores how child marriage perpetuates cycles of poverty, gender inequality, and violations of human rights, robbing children of their childhood, education, health, and future prospects. Next, the abstract explores the rationale behind criminalization, emphasizing the need for legal frameworks that explicitly prohibit child marriage and impose penalties on perpetrators. It discusses the importance of legal accountability in signaling societal condemnation of the practice, deterring potential offenders, and providing justice and recourse for survivors. Moreover, the abstract examines the challenges and complexities associated with criminalization, including issues of enforcement, access to justice, and cultural resistance. It acknowledges the limitations of legal measures alone in addressing the root causes of child marriage and underscores the importance of complementary interventions, such as community mobilization, education, and economic empowerment. Furthermore, the abstract analyzes the role of international cooperation and collaboration in advancing efforts to criminalize child marriage, emphasizing the need for coordinated action across borders to address this global issue effectively.
